This morning at 8:30 the temps were in the high 70's to low 80's, sunny, with a nice breeze from the north. There were 6 monarchs feeding on my roofdeck garden, and as one or two would leave for the ground-level gardens lone monarchs would glide in from over the rooftops and take their place. This went on for hours. In addition, the arriving monarchs would often be accompanied by painted ladies, of which there were dozens.
The monarchs all looked very robust and durable. As another observer pointed out, their wings seemed thicker, their bodies larger. They seemed to waste little time hanging around, instead feeding, flying off to the neighboring gardens, then continuing south.
