Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/11/2019

Number: 2

I have 2 hummers fighting over the feeder this afternoon. I made them fresh syrup, filled a second feeder, and wrapped towels around the feeder to try to keep the nectar warm longer. It's horrid out, 37 degrees with a fierce 20+mph WSW wind. Cold and gray. I hope these guys can make it through the weekend until temps warm up again.

On another note, I would love a blog post on this, hummers in cold weather. I know they go into torpor, but can they handle temps below freezing with a little snow? Now that south of us, Iowa through northern Texas, is freezing tonight, can they still make it south without nectar flowers blooming? How high of wind speed will ground migrating birds? I've looked online but haven't seen this addressed, would love to hear from J North on this! Monarchs also, had some stragglers here this week. I hope there is still hope!
