Today we spotted 9 monarchs flying toward the SW between 12:20 and 12:45. It was sunny and 57 degrees with a sustained wind out of the NW. None of them stopped to nectar but simply flew about 10 to 20 feet above ground.
We saw 1 more monarch at 1:30. It was 62 degrees on Clarks Bridge Road near Lake Lanier. It, too, was flying toward the SW.
At 12:55 at a Chevron Gas Station in Cleveland, GA, a monarch flew across the road and appeared to go down to the grass. There are very few flowers remaining due to prior weeks of extreme heat and drought, but I did spot some small ones in the grassy areas along the roadside. It was 65 degrees, sunny still, with wind from NW still.
The last monarch we spotted was at 5:23, 58 degrees, sunny, breezy flying SW through the town of Hiawassee, GA, in the northern part of the state.
