Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/23/2019

Number: 2

Dropped my son at Junior Naturalists at the Visitor Centre and headed down to the tip. Strong Southwest wind so I headed to the east side of tip and worked my way northward. There is a lot of erosion and degradation of the shoreline so exploring this side is harder than it seems. When I got to a point immediately east of the favoured hackberry tree (see reports by Darlene) I found one hanging on a grapevine less than a metre above the water. My camera on my phone is horrible but I submitted the picture regardless to show where the Monarch was. Find the white branch that is vertical in the photograph, follow it up and look immediately left of the tip of the branch and you will see a triangle. That is the Monarch. I turned around and searched the treeline abutting the shoreline and halfway up a hackberry tree was another single Monarch. I was not able to finish scanning the shoreline as sunset at 18:37 was fast approaching. Both Monarchs were pristine. I wondered whether the one hanging on above Lake Erie may have actually climbed up out of the lake to where I found it. Temperature when I arrived at the tip was 11°C and the sky was clear. Temperatures are expected to rise overnight to 13°C.
