Sightings report image

Date: 10/24/2019

Number: 60

Early afternoon at the Tip at Point Pelee National Park 11:15-1pm
14°c High 15°c Low 6°c
WNW wind at 8/21 kmh. Due to decrease further mid afternoon. Partly cloudy. Wind finally decreased after a few days of very strong westerly wind stalling the Monarch Migration. It was still a bit too strong for them to leave. About a half dozen tested the wind on the warm calmer east side but returned to tree line. A few also tested the wind on west side but returned to trees. Saw 2 clusters of 2. Monarchs individually basked in the sun here & there in Hackberry, Hop & Mulberry trees & on Grapevine. All that I could take photos of had plump abdomens. There are very few nectar flowers left; a few Asters & Knapweed & a wee bit of goldenrod.
I observed one monarch with a v cut out of upper left wing but flew fine. All pristine.

Count by clicker & binoculars

Returned just after 5 pm. 13°c Partly cloudy. Much calmer wind NW @ 3/13kmh. No Monarchs seen except one that arrived from the north at around 5:30 pm. Sunset 6:35. Satisfied that the others seen earlier continued south on their migration.
Fri Oct 25th will again be a good migration day with light northerly wind. Temps decreasing to 11-13°c for the wknd again with strong wind.
It's a wrap!for the season here at Point Pelee National Park!!
