Signs of Spring

Date: 02/19/2020

Number: 1

Fluttering about our early flowering natives.

Editor's note: contacted observer for more information on sighting

I'm 90% it was a Monarch based on it's wing pattern. It was a bright vibrant orange. We also get viceroys in the Willamette Valley, but I didn't detect the extra line across the wings. We have not seen many others out and about yet this "spring," but are also fortunate enough to catch glimpses of swallowtails and fender's blue butterflies now and again (we live near many protected natural areas where Kincaid's lupine is abundant).

We've had an unseasonably warm winter here (as much of the country has) and we do have some milkweed that stuck around in neighboring natural areas and is starting to re-emerge, though it is not flowering.
