I was unable to take a photo, but it was most definitely a Monarch butterfly.
Editor's note: contacted observer to confirm sighting.
I was very excited to see it flying past me as I was eating my lunch! I work at the San Antonio River Authority, a government agency, right along the San Antonio River in San Antonio, Texas. I saw it flying by heading Northward along the river at around noon when the sun was brightly shining. I was not up close and personal, but I feel certain it was a Monarch. It appeared colorful and bright, so I am assuming this is a new adult.
The weather here has been crazy, recently quite cold in the evening and then warming up in the afternoons slightly. The San Antonio River Authority has planted native milkweed along the river. At Confluence Park, we saw many Monarchs here last fall drinking the nectar of the Gregg’s Mist-flower. I looked for the Antelopehorn milkweed last week, but did not find any yet. Our Superintendent of Park Operation showed me where it had been planted, so I will continue to monitor and continue to record my sightings as I am out at Confluence Park doing lots of field trips.
