Perhaps from caterpillars on milkweeds this fall/winter.
Milkweeds: we have twelve of them in our new flower garden created last fall. I saw caterpillars eating the leaves and on the stalks November/December. We did not have a hard freeze this winter, so we hoped the caterpillars survived. If they did, the butterflies we saw could have originated in Houston and not have been migratory.
About the color --- do not know. We have no experience in the appearance of butterflies. No pictures.
I saw two again two days ago when the temp was 80F
