Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 02/29/2020

Number: 32

In Houston, we have had a very warm winter with no hard freezes. This has led to milkweed growing back after being cut back, milkweed producing flowers and seed pods, Monarch butterflies staying around throughout the winter months instead of overwintering in Mexico, and lots of eggs being laid. Even though these sightings were not the first of the winter as other park employees have found Monarch caterpillars and butterflies in the garden all throughout winter, while doing an inspection of the Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden at Dennis Johnston Park, this was my first full inspection. I counted 32 caterpillars that ranged from 2nd-5th instar, and one dead chrysalis. - The Monarch Project Educational Initiative, www.MonarchPEI.org
