Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/04/2020

Number: 1

Migration is in full swing here. Hundreds of monarchs [witnessed over 6 hours] and countless eggs on a great years crop of milkweed. No caterpillars yet.

Editor's note: contacted observer to confirm sighting. Similar sighting reported at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, although not as many adults.

There were hundreds (over 6 hours) that I saw congregating mostly along the Rail trail. It was a windy day and I believe they were able to find adequate shelter and food in this area. Its a very dense area of vegetation. Most were either feeding, mating, or seeking shelter from the wind in the thickets of brush.
The main food source that I saw them feeding from were Mexican buckeye, Drummond's Hedgenettle, and bristle thistle. There was also a good amount of monarchs on the more dense vegetation areas of the heron flats trail. It only took me about 20-30 minutes before I saw more than a hundred. I was there for 6 hours and witnessed hundreds.
I only witnessed a handful here and there in open areas of the park and surrounding areas. It’s the most monarchs I’ve ever seen in person in one spot.
