Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/05/2020

Number: 1

First of the season.

I saw the monarch feeding on a Mexican plum, near the peak of its bloom.

Weather has been cold fronts with showers and southerly winds shifting a lot. Temperatures generally in the sixties and low seventies for highs and low forties into fifties at night.

So far, there are no milkweeds that have emerged, but I’m expecting them soon. I have a number of antelope horns milkweed on my place (1.5 acres).

I also saw a swallowtail on the same tree—I think it was a black swallowtail, but I couldn’t be sure; it was too high in the tree for me to see it clear enough to identify. There were/are also red admirals feeding on the Mexican plum.

Unfortunately I was unable to get a photo of the monarch, but it looked somewhat faded, yet in pretty good shape overall.
