Was ready to cut back milkweed in my garden; saw many larva. Brought 6 inside to raise. All 6 formed chrysalides, emerged and were released from January 27 to February 7th, 2020.
For the past two summers I have had eggs/larva on my milkweed (Tropical variety, which is frowned upon in some circles, but a prior owner had planted it). When I noticed they were mysteriously disappearing, I brought some inside to raise. I released 6 adults in October 2018; 8 adults in November 2019.
In January 2020 I was in the process of cutting down the Tropical milkweed to get fresh new growth. That’s when I saw new 10 larva! I brought in 6 of them (did not have much milkweed left to feed them all) because we had a cold spell, unusual for the Bay Area. All six eclosed within a week of each other, and were able to fly off during a sunny spell.
I have planted some milkweed seeds in an effort to grown more milkweed.
