Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 03/08/2020

Number: 2

Mating behavior observed. Milkweed is available.

The monarchs looked like they were in good shape, but I couldn't get very close to them. They were displaying mid-air courtship behavior. The weather has been warm, lately up to the high 60's to high 70's occasionally. We had an extremely mild winter.

I have not had a good look at my milkweeds checking for eggs, but plan to soon. I have a number of species including Asclepias perennis, A. lanceolata, A. viridis, A. incarnata, and A. curassavica (in order of abundance). The A. perennis is up and everywhere (their usual choice), A. incarnate has been growing quickly lately, and the A curassavica was just planted in a bed out of the greenhouse. Our property includes about 7/10 of an acre of restored prairie, which is a butterfly magnet. I have seen Red Admiral and Black Swallowtail in the past week or two.
