All Other Signs of Spring

For the past two evenings just after sundown, I have witnessed small flocks of Great Blue Herons migrating north. Their gravely squawks caught my attention. They were not flying in tight formation but spread out flying individually. I presumed they were communicating as they randomly squawked across the late evening sky just about 15-20 minutes before total darkness.

I witnessed this in last September as they were flying south for the winter. Only wish they had a GPS tracking device to know where they were heading.

Great Blue Herons are year round permanent birds in my area. I am not aware of a rookery nearby and I only observe this in early March and late September which leads me to believe these are migratory herons.
