Lots of activity with monarchs flying in the garden today.
Editor's note: contacted observer for more information on this sighting
The monarchs were in the garden from about 1 in the afternoon and I did the estimate around 6 in the evening. I have been finding monarch wings in my garden for the last 10 days. This is one of the largest groups I have seen in the migration going north. By the time I got up at 7 am , if any of the monarchs had roosted overnight, they were long gone. I have not seen any today.
Some of the monarchs looked like they were mating flying 2 by 2 . Most of the activity was around a large mesquite tree in my garden. There were quite a few birds chasing them as well. Several of the butterflies perched in the mesquite for several minutes which how I got the picture.
I do have milkweed in my garden, anywhere form 30 to 40 plants, different sizes. I live in a sub development with large lots. I have an acre. I have mesquites, huizaches, bauhinia, pines and assorted fruit trees as well as bugambilia, carnations, sweet peas and various cactus blooming at the moment. I am right in the middle of the migration path so monarch are a common sight here.
