This is a lovely female monarch sipping nectar from a pink thistle (Cirsium horridulum). After nectaring, she rested in the grass sunning her wings. It was noon, cloudy, 78 degrees F, windy, with 68% humidity.

Though I wasn't able to spend much time observing them today, I did notice at least 6+ monarchs. They were nectaring, sun-bathing, and flying low seeking milkweed. I think most were females judging from their actions. The two I was able to photograph were both females. I also later found monarch eggs on the newly sprouted milkweed ~ the first I had seen this spring.

The monarchs have a good abundance of wildflowers to choose from: false garlic flowers, wild blackberry blossoms, lyre-leaf sage, and pink and yellow thistles and more. It is always a joy to see the monarchs arrive after their long home stay in Mexico!
