Our first female Monarch arrived on a warm, sun-filled mid-day with slightly faded wings and little tatters on the edges. She wafted among seven milkweeds laying eggs for about three hours. I pulled aside 35 eggs using the experience of protective hatch-and-release, due to the many wasps and tree ants who've arrived three days prior. There are at least 25 more eggs that will remain on the garden plants.
Since all of the milkweeds are within 20' of our home and porch foundations, our termite co. has worked with us by not drenching any of the area with poisonous insecticides and are instead going to position bait traps at intervals which carry no poison. Last spring I asked them not to treat the foundations until late October, so that the butterfly and hummingbird population could migrate away. They deferred treatment, giving us time to make a safe decision going forward.
This year we are stopping all insecticide injection and using bait stations only, as long as there is no termite activity.
