I went out on a short walk down our driveway at around 9am. It was cloudy w/some sun peeking through at times, breezy, around 67 degrees F, humid, and with very dewy grass ~ a lovely morning. I saw 3 monarchs on this short jaunt. I think they were all females. Mostly they were nectaring, flying low by milkweed, or sunning and resting in the grass.
On the milkweed I briefly looked at I found eggs and some 1st, 2nd, and one 3rd instar larvae.
I had to work inside today and was not able to check the pastures, though I saw monarchs flying past the windows later throughout the day.
This is one of the wonderful morning monarchs sipping nectar from a yellow thistle (Cirsium horridulum). The yellow & pink thistles are "nectar fountains" and favorites of the monarchs. They attract monarchs, bees, beetles, and other butterflies ~ they are important nectar sources!
