evening sighting [of monarch?] flitting by freshly mowed grass
We weren't prepared to be seeing anything, just standing on our front porch enjoying the warm sunshine when we saw it. Just the one, flitting low to the ground over the freshly mowed grass. If memory serves me correctly, undersides of the wings were muted but you could definitely see the orange and black of the upper wings. I was surprised, and asked my boyfriend if it was really a monarch and he said he thought so.
We don't have any milkweed, but there's lots of clover and little yellow and purplish flowers in the yard. We saw the butterfly flying over the tree lawn (but no tree there). As far as other butterflies, we have the yellow ones that are common down here.
Looking at pictures of the other butterflies, thinking what we saw was maybe a painted lady rather than a monarch.
