Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 04/07/2020

Number: 10

10 Monarch caterpillars. Butterflies were in my yard 13 25 March and were observed laying eggs on 23 March. These are Butterfly Weed Milkweeds that grew up in my Bougainvillea pots last year. They were brought in during freezes and the Milkweed continued to grow and flower so they were ready-made for the returning Monarchs. Normally our Milkweed freezes in Central Texas and comes up from roots, but too small for returning Monarchs. I usually buy some plants from the nursery for the Monarchs, but with COVID-19 and Stay-at-home order, I tried another approach. The Monarchs laid ten eggs and I covered the eggs with 5 gallon paint strainer mesh bags and ten caterpillars emerged. Better percentage than Ive ever had because wasps, spiders and Green Anole Lizards normally take all the eggs and caterpillars.
