I observed 20+ monarchs at different times today. In the morning around 10:30am it was sunny and 72 degrees F. The ground was soggy from the rains of the last several days. The monarchs were enjoying the sunshine, flying, egg-laying, sunning, and nectaring on blooming milkweed, pink & yellow thistles, and prairie plantains. The majority had faded wings, some tattered, but one was a young bright-winged male monarch.
Around 2:30pm it had become overcast and was 73 degrees F. I continued to see monarch activity ~ females egg-laying, males looking for females, resting/sunning monarchs, and lots of nectaring from the abundant wildflowers. As I walked around I sometimes startled resting/sunning monarchs in the grass. The milkweed is abundant with some of it blooming and some new sprouts emerging. This is a photo of one of the male monarchs nectaring from the tall prairie plantains (Cacalia plantaginia).
