Saw one monarch coming in from the west with approximately 15 mph tailwind. 5:15 PM. I am confident in my ID.
We had a warm day with steady winds out of the west. A couple day prior to my sighting, we had warm temperatures and strong winds out of the south most of the day. On the 30th, we were in the backyard that afternoon and I saw something flitting around a lilac bush. When I walked over, I got within several feet of the butterfly, which then circled the bush and took off to the east toward my neighbors stand of pine trees.
Milkweed is up, I don’t have any here on my property, but less than a mile away there’s a prairie restoration and a demonstration pollinator garden. Over the weekend, I saw milkweeds ranging from about 2” (A. tuberosa) to around 7” (A. sullivantii), no eggs though.
