First adult monarch butterflies seen today (30 April 2020). Ovipositing on common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) -- see photo. The monarchs were selecting the smaller milkweed plants, the ones less than two inches tall. There are taller plants in our gardens, up to 8 inches tall, but the monarchs did not lay eggs on those larger plants.
