Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/02/2020

Number: 7

Flying north over freshly burned field and over pond. Lots of milkweed sprouting in the area.

We went to the area to fish and bird. We arrived at 3:37 that is the time stamp on my ebird.org arrival time. We stayed for 200 minutes. The first 45 is when we saw them trickle thru 1 by 1. At first we we happy to see them then we yelled across the pond that we saw them more and more. Then I texted my friends so see if they were seeing them. One was in Diamond, MO birding at George Washington Carver and the other at Shoal Creek Conservation Education center in Joplin. They said no.

They were certainly Monarchs. They were on the smaller size and we wondered if they were a second generation. We were side tracked so didn’t see if they were laying eggs in milkweed. The property was burned this last fall or winter and super easy to see milkweed growing. I noticed more and more as I traveled the property.

I haven’t seen any Monarchs in my yard yet in Joplin which is not the norm the last 3 years. I only saw them earlier this month as I reported at Diamond And Carver Prairie and Webb city waste water treatment plant. Other naturalist aren’t saying they are seeing Monarchs. So puzzling.

We are seeing American Ladies, Tiger and Black Swallowtails which seems early and just saw a Red Spotted Purple and I think I saw a Goat weed family specifies.

No photos of the Monarchs. They fly too fast and weren’t landing. They were all flying north.
