Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/16/2020

Number: 1

Flying quickly over yard. Yes, it was by far the earliest I have ever seen a Monarch in the Spring here.

I am positive it was a Monarch--size, coloring and flying habit were all correct. It was in good shape--bright colors and undamaged wings. I'm sorry that I don't have a photo. I was out gardening, there was a great deal of wind (as usual, for here) and it crossed my yard quickly. It was "traveling," rather than "floating."

Common milkweed Ascelipias syriaca has just emerged in my flower gardens during the past week. I have not checked for eggs but will do that in the next couple of days. There is a large patch of wild milkweed close by. I expect that it has not yet emerged, as it is in a meadow with a lot of grass.

I have seen one red admiral and one painted lady in the past month. We have had a cool and slow Spring. This week is our first week of weather with more than one day over 50 degrees. Cape Cod has also become extremely landscaped over the last 40 years and host plants are greatly diminished.....
