This is a short addition to two earlier observations.
On May 2nd I observed a monarch laying eggs in our garden. On May 15th three or four eggs hatched.
In one instance there were two eggs on one leaf and one hatched. I continued to watch the other egg and today (May 18th) the second egg hatched. So, 16 days as an egg.
To be certain about this observation I picked the leaf this afternoon after the egg turned dark and then observed the larva under a microscope as it ate its eggshell.
