Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/21/2020

Number: 1

This was a surprise! I usually do not see one until later.
We were celebrating our grown daughter's birthday outside and 6 ft. apart. We were walking the yard and enjoying the ducks and geese in the back yard. My daughter spotted the Monarch. Pretty sure not a Viceroy or other butterfly. I have been raising Monarchs and teaching about them for many years. You sort of know their flight pattern and shape. It flew from my rain water garden to the lilacs and then to the flowering apple tree. It did not stay very long and flew off out of sight to the East.

I have lots of 5" -7" common milkweed in my front yard and have checked some of it for eggs, and have not found any yet. I will continue to look for eggs.
