We saw two monarchs today, flying around our backyard. They were seen at two different times, about three hours apart, so I don't know if they were two different ones or the same one two different times.
They seemed to be patrolling our extensive garden, perhaps looking for milkweed. They never landed on anything before moving on.
There's plenty of milkweed here for them, though it's short yet, with the exception of the A. exaltata (Poke milkweed). That's fairly tall and has flower clusters forming. That's also where I usually find the first eggs of the season. I looked for eggs on most of the milkweed at the end of the day, but didn't find any.
Beautiful, summer-like day with a high of 89°F, and quite humid. Brief shower late in the afternoon.
