Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/27/2020

Number: 9

Multiple monarchs seen in our native prairie beginning in the afternoon of the 27th.

We have about 5 acres of native prairie that is only about 1/4 mile from Lake Winnebago and all of the monarchs were seen while we were sitting in one spot over the course of about 75 minutes or so. They were flying just over the prairie, and most were observed as singles although we did have one group of three go through. Most were flying north to south. Occasionally they would land on something in the prairie, but wouldn't stay long before they'd fly on again. One did come over to take a look at our flowering crab apple tree near the house but didn't land.

We have lived on this land now for three years and last September and in September 2017 too, we were visited by several hundred monarchs. They appear to like to roost overnight in our honey locust trees and feast all day on the asters that bloom in our prairie. They stay, depending on the weather, for about 7-10 days. Their favorite plant though appears to be our Common Boneset. They love the milkweed, of course, including some swamp milkweed we've planted, but that Common Boneset is covered in monarchs when it blooms.
