Robin (Nesting Behavior)

Date: 06/04/2020

Number: 1

Very exciting day today! I noticed our resident female robin making repeated trips under our back deck today. At first I didn't understand what she was up to. She was covered in dirt and kept pecking at the ground, just under our dripping hose reel. Then it dawned on me - she was collecting mud to build her nest! This is her 2nd nest of the season. Her first brood fledged from the nest on May 20 or thereabouts (refer to my previous sighting), so 15 days ago. It is fun to watch all of the fledglings in our backyard being fed by their parents & learning to forage for food by following around their "Daddy Robin", bathing together in our bird bath and eating Mountain Ash berries which are still abundant on our Mountain Ash tree. I was amazed that one fledgling was even able to pick berries on his own from our Mountain Ash tree only 6 days after flying from the nest. Incredible.
