I was spreading mulch around a circular raised bed where I planted a butterfly bush late in the afternoon and surprisingly saw a monarch butterfly. I didn’t expect to see one because there have been tons of tiger swallowtails around so I expected the sized butterfly I saw out of the corner of my eye at first to be that. The monarch butterfly was just gliding around the area checking things out. It landed a couple times on the lawn but continued gliding around and was nectaring on the lilac close by. It didn’t stay still long enough for a picture.
