Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/05/2020

Number: 3

lots of milkweeds, but they're not yet blooming

The 3 individuals we saw were spread out over Laurel Hill Park in Lorton, Virginia. We had one individual that looked like she was ovipositing on a milkweed, but we couldn't see the eggs.

There were sulphurs and cabbage whites and several smaller butterflies, but we didn't see any of the larger ones.

We were part of a larger butterfly survey. The team has been doing butterfly and dragonfly surveys at 4 sites for the past 24 years. The data are all being added to Dr. Leslie Reis's database. I did the survey with Jim Waggener, who started all this about 30 years ago.
