Late in the afternoon I went walking about in the pastures & surprised this bright-winged newborn female monarch who was resting on the path. She proceeded to fly about and found flowering milkweed to nectar from. She was very sprightly & energetic! She was the first "for sure" newborn I had seen this season.
It was overcast, about 68 degrees F, and shortly at dusk the rains would come in a downpour.
As I went back up to the house, I saw another female monarch who was egg-laying. She had extremely thin and tattered wings. Very dramatic to see these two moments apart ~ one just beginning her journey with newly spun wings, the other long-journeyed & worn, yet intrepidly giving life to the next generation. (I will add her photo to Monarch - Other Observations).
