This first monarch I saw was in the early afternoon on July 4th. It was a female whose wings were somewhat pale and torn at the edges. She fed on our milkweed plants (now in full bloom) and laid eggs as well.
I believe the monarch in the attached photo is a male, that showed up in early evening and fed on milkweed and the buddleia it's shown on.
