I have been surprised to see fair numbers of Monarchs the last few days. I have not had good success seeing caterpillars on milkweed and had decided that there simply weren't many. However, in the last few days, I have seen several monarchs per day, many of them egg laying females, which tells me they've been eclosed for a few days anyway. My recollections for the last few days are:
Jly4, five monarchs
Jly5, four monarchs
Jly6, seven monarchs
Jly7, six monarchs
Jly8, ten monarchs.
Some of these could be recounts, but i would guess at least 80% are not.
Hot weather continues here in Wisconsin, as in most of the country. I suspect this has shortened the time cycle just a bit for the 2nd generation to eclose and begin mating, etc.
