I went collecting Milkweed leaves for our captive reared larvae from the verges of a lightly travelled road near our house; using them before the next cutting by the municipality. As I was getting back in my car I noticed a male patrolling a large patch of mature flowering common milkweed on the private property opposite edge of the ditch. As I watched, another male came along but the first male successfully defended his patch and sent the interloper on his way. I have read about this behaviour, however this was the first time I have witnessed it.
Hot and muggy 28C at approximately 18:30 after a day of multiple periods of rain showers interspersed with sun and clouds. Light northwest wind.
