Hummingbird, Other Observations

Date: 08/10/2020

Number: 1

There is one female or juvenile feeding from an active spiderweb on my deck I’ve never noticed that behavior before Has anyone else reported observing this? She’s not gathering web or even damaging it significantly Just hovering until she has carefully chosen then deftly plucking a snack She’ll check it out repeatedly and imo only go in if conditions are right Maybe the insect has to still be alive and certainly accessible? I do believe it’s only the single bird out of the eight or more regular visitors I have counted for sure that takes from the spider And from that one web exclusively
The web is in a prime spot to catch plenty of flying insects from moths at night to tiny wasps and gnats during the day and everything in between I’ve seen it several times over the past couple of weeks and waited to report to make sure that’s what is happening No picture because it’s in a difficult spot but I’ll keep trying
Activity has definitely increased at my feeders and flowers There are three in addition to the dominant adult male who are quite comfortable feeding extremely close to me and each other Probably all this year’s babies
