In the late afternoon I saw two pairs mating while flying. Later in the evening I was watching from the porch. Silhouetted against the setting sun and flying around the pines were at least 6 monarchs. I have seen them on other evenings this past week. Not in large numbers. Just a few floating lazily through the branches of the pines and maples.
