After having only 2 Ruby-throated hummingbirds at our feeder for most of the summer, around July 31 that number jumped to 7-8 daily and has remained there. We have also observed a new behavior that is unique to this crowd. In past years we have never seen more than 1 hummingbird feeding at a time, no matter how many birds, and despite the fact that the feeders had 6 ports. Sharing was never tolerated and the aerial dogfights were fierce. Although the individuals in this group do run each other off quite regularly, on multiple occasions we have also seen up to 6 birds feeding at the same time. Intriguing.
