I certified my suburban yard with Xerces as a Pollinator Habitat, with Monarch Watch as a Monarch Waystation, and with North American Butterfly Association as a Butterfly Garden and Habitat. For the last 6 or 7 years I have been replacing 35 year old shrubs with native Michigan perennials. I also have a large variety of annuals, vines, shrubs, and trees that are host plants for pollinators. I do not use pesticides or herbicides and I now have 2 rain barrels.
