Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/28/2020

Number: 1

Monarch Waystation #271 reports a large 5th instar feeding on a stalk of swamp milkweed that's about 30 inches away from the HVAC unit in the back yard about 8:30 am today. The near constant breeze from the HVAC fan in warm humid weather is swaying the stalk as the larva holds on and eats. Note the trail of leaf remnants on the stem it's feeding on [photo]. The larva may be taking advantage of the fact that the local wasps find it a challenge to land on this stalk to search for food. Did not conduct a search of the yard for other larvae, this one was seen in the midst of errands.
