I was surprised to see a number of monarchs along the high elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway on 8/28/2020. Temperatures were between 65 and 69 degrees. It was windy and overcast much of the day and monarchs were sighted between 12:20 and 3:00 p.m. One at Caney Fork OL; 6 at Courthouse Valley OL; 10 at Beartrail Ridge OL; 2 at Richland Balsam OL; and 7 at View Doubletop Mountain OL. All these locations are higher than 5000 feet in elevation. Most monarchs were sitting and nectaring on a variety of wildflowers.
