5 newly emerged adults.
The reports I have been filing recently for both larvae and recently hatched adults are all for wild individuals. The recently hatched individuals reported looked to the eye to be recently emerged from naturally occurring cocoons with brilliant fresh markings. None are being captive reared. All have been observed in our garden which has a couple of varieties of milkweed present.
Last year we had dozens of monarch larvae, so many that I lost count. There were so many monarch sightings in general in this part of Maine that I very foolishly did not bother to log any into the data base. My bad. I was seeing single adults flying practically every day along the roads while driving. I remember seeing an article in the local paper about rescue teams going out to decimated stands of milkweed along the roads and moving larvae to uneaten stands. We ourselves had to move larvae around in the garden when they ate some plants down to the stalks.
It is much quieter this year as I have seen very few in my daily travels.
