Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/02/2020

Number: 4

4 new monarchs emerged this morning.

I have milkweed planted in my backyard and the 4 monarchs that emerged today were larvae that hatched from eggs that were laid on my milkweeds by wild adult females. I do not have enclosures or netting around my milkweed, so they are fully exposed to the elements and predators (lizards and wasps especially). The monarch in the picture emerged from a chrysalis on my patio chair; the caterpillar travelled about 20 feet across my patio (where he was fully exposed) to get to the chair.

I respect the natural conditions and try not to interfere. I count 5 more chrysalis in my backyard right now that will emerge soon and still waiting for the migration to pass through Louisiana.
