I was watching from my window when I spotted the female or juvenile Ruby Throated, feeding from the pale and spotted jewel weed flowers seen growing in a hedge next to my house. It sipped from 15-20 different flowers before flying away.
This hummer ignored the feeder that can be seen hanging in front of the window in the photo. In fact, there was another hummingbird at this feeder and another hummingbird at the feeder on my front porch, while this hummer was visiting the jewelweeds
My husband and I have encouraged jewelweed to grow along two sides of our house for over 30 years as a hedge and looks especially beautiful with the flowers in bloom now.
Most of the time I see the hummers at the feeders or just sipping from a flower once and then going on. It was exciting to see this hummer sipping from so many of the flowers.
