We have a patch of common milkweed in our pasture that has never been allowed to mature. It usually gets mowed down as we thought were weeds. This year mowing was delayed and when I saw the flowers and smelled that fragrance I had to know what the plants were. I asked NC Gardening Group and was told how lucky I was to have it growing and that it was common milkweed. I go out to the patch almost daily and observe. In addition to the butterflies Ive seen the different sizes of caterpillars and the seed pods. Cows have been moved in and now Im concerned.
