Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/03/2020

Number: 4

Attached is a photo of an immature female rufous hummingbird near our front feeder (visible from the street). It was first observed on 3 September 2020 (while we were seeing 3 other hummingbirds, all ruby-throated) and it was trapped, color-marked, and banded on 8 September 2020 (and it has been here all day on 9 September 2020, along with a male ruby-throated hummingbird in our back yard). This is the earliest that we have observed a species other than a ruby-throated in our yard (in 2019 we saw our first-ever other species in mid-November). Based on the absence of fat on the bird, Nancy Newfield (who trapped and banded it) believes that it will stay here until spring 2021.
