Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/12/2020

Number: 75

Approximately 75 in a honey locust tree.

The first date and it looks like the only date for our roosts this year was Saturday, 9/12. I was able to count about 50 in one of our honey locust trees and about 25 in the other.

We have about 5 acres of land planted in native prairie and the monarchs that roosted were feeding there on the 12th and again, somewhat on the 13th. We had no roost activity last night (9/13), however. We’ve had decent monarch activity for about two weeks or so, but far short of the numbers we’ve seen in previous years when we’ve had roosts of over 300.

Favorite nectar sources this year seemed to be meadow blazingstar, Canada goldenrod, and new England aster (which is really late to bloom this year – most has still not flowered).

The overnight low was 58 I believe and the wind seemed to be from the south. They were sheltered from the wind, as on both trees they roosted on the north side.
