Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/13/2020

Number: 12

Monarch Waystation #271 reports a dozen larvae scattered in both front and backyards, tallied at 9:10 am today. Did not do a thorough search of every milkweed in both yards. Front yard: two 4th and one 5th instar on a potted tropical milkweed. Backyard: two 3rd instars on purple milkweed plus 1 new 3rd instar on tropical milkweed; one early 4th instar on tropical milkweed; and five 5th instars [one early, four late], all on tropical milkweed but for one late 5th instar gallantly hanging on as it feeds on the swaying swamp milkweed within 30 inches of our blowing HVAC unit. Photo shows two 5th + one early 4th instar larvae on the same tropical milkweed in the backyard, with one 5th instar starting to feed on the stem the 4th instar rests on. Rude awakening to follow!
