Sightings report image

Date: 09/16/2020

Number: 52

While waiting for the southwest wind to change direction, I took my 2 mile walk at 1:45 PM. I only saw one monarch nectaring on a purple flowered butterfly shrub at 1st and Church Streets in town at 2:15 PM. I finally got to the beach at Harrisville State Park along Lake Huron at 3:30 PM, and with help from Jamie and Dawn that were visiting the park, we counted 51 monarchs until 5:45 PM. They both have never witnessed a directional migration of monarchs before. Weather was cloudy with the Wind SW-11 mph turning around to the NE-7 mph by 5 PM. In between, the Wind was briefly NW-2-5 mph at 4 PM when most of the monarchs passed high overhead with only one landing on the beach. The Temperature at start of the count on my walk was 65F., and at the end of the count, at the beach, it was 61F. The Temperature topped out at 77F. at around 3 PM.
